Carolyn Ruth Fugate Hobson, 76, passed away on November 24, 2016. She was born on September 19, 1940 on the family farm in Rye Cove, Va. to the late J.E. Fugate, Jr. and Elizabeth Click Fugate. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her daughter Carrie-Lyn Hobson and only nephew, Charles William Fugate, II.

She is survived by her husband James "Squeaky" M. Hobson; daughter Julie Carolyn Gardiner and husband Ted ; granddaughters, Mackenzie Elizabeth Gardiner and Madison Lyn Gardiner; sister Phyllis Fugate Plageman and husband Gerald ; brother Dr. J.E....

Carolyn Ruth Fugate Hobson, 76, passed away on November 24, 2016. She was born on September 19, 1940 on the family farm in Rye Cove, Va. to the late J.E. Fugate, Jr. and Elizabeth Click Fugate. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her daughter Carrie-Lyn Hobson and only nephew, Charles William Fugate, II.

She is survived by her husband James "Squeaky" M. Hobson; daughter Julie Carolyn Gardiner and husband Ted ; granddaughters, Mackenzie Elizabeth Gardiner and Madison Lyn Gardiner; sister Phyllis Fugate Plageman and husband Gerald ; brother Dr. J.E. Fugate, III and his wife Donna; brother, Charles W. Fugate and his wife Ann; several nieces and cousins, and special pet and companion, Comet.

Mrs. Hobson graduated from Big Stone Gap High School in 1958. She attended Madison College (now James Madison University) from 1958 to 1960 and then transferred to Emory and Henry College from 1960 to 1961and graduated with a B.A. Degree. Her majors were English and Psychology and Education. She minored in Spanish. She later enrolled in University of Virginia for many graduate hours. Her work history included teaching at James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg, Va., Drewry Mason High School, Martinsville High School, Fieldale Collinsville High School, Carver High School, Bassett High School, Laurel Park High School, and National Business College. During that time she taught English, Spanish, and Psychology.

She belonged to the Virginia Education Association and National Education Association. She felt a special calling to teach as a young person in high school and enjoyed being in her classrooms with the future citizens and leaders of their communities, states, and country. She often told her students that she learned more from them than they would ever learn from her.

Carolyn Hobson was a member of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, Children's Coordinator, Sunday School Assembly Pianist, and was a member of Discoverers Sunday School Class and the Cora Lee Class. She also was a member of the Gertrude Tinnell Circle.

She was reared in Rye Cove and Big Stone Gap, Va. After College she moved to Fredericksburg, Va. and then to Martinsville and Henry County where she has resided since 1962.

Carolyn's interests in life included playing the piano, travel, writing poetry, sewing, crafts, genealogy, and love for family, country and friends. The center in her life always was serving the Lord who has now taken her home to Him to see all her loved ones, especially her daughter, Carrie-Lyn.

A Memorial service will be held at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Martinsville, Va. on November 27, 2016 a 3:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on November 27, 2016. Interment will be at Holston View Cemetery in Weber City, Va. at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donation be made to St. Jude's Hospital , P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis Tenn. 38105 or Wesley United Methodist Church, 824 Starling Avenue, Martinsville, VA. 24112.
